Every week, Alliance for a Better Minnesota will highlight the important work being done in the progressive community. Focusing on issues that impact Minnesotan’s lives, this important work helps Minnesota continue moving forward.
Catch up and Keep Up: Indexing the minimum wage is a hot topic in the progressive community this week. Indexing means tying the minimum wage to keep up with inflation, so that worker’s wages can keep up with the cost of living. The Minnesota Budget Project explained why it’s so important in a blog post picked up by MinnPost, which concluded that “without indexing, low-wage workers will soon see their wages erode.”
Safe Schools: On Tuesday, MN2020 held an online conversation about the Safe and Supportive Schools Act, explaining the key proposals and debunking some of the myths. The online conversation focused on the need for this proposal to help teachers and schools addressing bullying with the proper training, resources and processes.
Public Transportation: The Sierra Club is working to bring better transportation options to Minnesota. A recent blog post outlined the many arguments for public transit. In a nutshell:
“We have jobs, classes, families and friends across the cities and across our state; and we have a right to get to them in the most affordable, healthiest, safest way.”
Being healthy: Wages are also a health concern, says the Minnesota Nurses Association. The MNA highlighted a report released by the Minnesota Department of Health that connects the dots between increased income and positive health improvements.
