Every week, Alliance for a Better Minnesota will highlight the important work being done in the progressive community. Focusing on issues that impact Minnesotans’ lives, this important work helps Minnesota continue moving forward.
Senate Democrats To Act Against Hobby Lobby Decision: Last week, Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid said on the floor that Senate Democrats plan to take action against the Supreme Court’s ruling that some corporations can opt out of paying for their employees’ birth control. Democrats heavily criticized the decision because a woman’s health care decisions are not her boss’s business; while Republicans have praised it because it gives corporations a greater ability to choose than individual women themselves.
Minnesota’s Flourishing Under DFL: MPR reported this week that although Minnesota GOP candidates will campaign less about social issues like LGBT rights and more about the economy, they may have a tough time selling their ideas because our state is doing so well. Since Gov. Dayton’s administration took office, over 150,000 jobs have been created, the state’s unemployment rate is at a seven-year low, and the Twin Cities has the lowest unemployment rate of any major metropolitan area in the nation.
‘Dreamers’ Can Get Driver’s Licenses: The 9th U.S. Circuit Court ruled earlier this week that ‘dreamers,’ or children who came to the United States without obtaining legal citizenship are eligible to receive driver’s licenses in the state of Arizona. Recent figures show that there have been 23,000 applications for the program in Arizona, and nearly 20,000 have been accepted.
Obamacare Haters? Now Lovers: A new study found that nearly 75 percent of self-identified conservatives who bought new health insurance under the Affordable Care Act (ACA) say they are more than pleased with their new care.
