The State Fair serves as the unofficial kick-off of each Minnesota election cycle, with candidates and political parties garnering the attention of hundreds of thousands of fairgoers.
Visitors to the GOP booth will see that Minnesota Republicans will do anything to take attention off of their presidential nominee, Donald Trump. Always divisive and often distasteful, the main attraction in the GOP booth this year is a cardboard cutout of Democratic nominee Hillary Clinton in a prison uniform.
This type of behavior is right on trend for conservative rhetoric: Rather than admitting their support for the unpopular presidential nominee, Republican leaders including House Speaker Kurt Daudt and Minority Leader David Hann distract with jabs against Clinton. However, actions speak louder than words. Their opposition to women’s healthcare, equal rights for LGBT individuals, and common sense gun violence prevention legislation falls right in line with Donald Trump’s style of politics.
The Great Minnesota Get-Together is a place where Minnesotans gather with family and friends to say goodbye to summer. I doubt fairgoers will be impressed with Minnesota Republicans and their attempts to distract voters from Trump’s – or their own – actions.
