Today, we’re celebrating our Lt. Governor, Peggy Flanagan!
During the 2022 midterm elections, Governor Walz and Lieutenant Governor Flanagan won four more years in office on their promise to protect abortion rights in Minnesota, prioritize Minnesota schools, students, and teachers, and pursue an ambitious agenda that invests in Minnesota families and builds an economy that works for everyone, not just those at the very top.
Lieutenant Governor Flanagan is a history-maker
When she was elected as Lt. Governor in 2018, Peggy became Minnesota’s first Native American Lt. Governor and the first Native American to hold statewide office.
She was the first Native American woman to address the Democratic National Convention as an official speaker in 2016 and was one of only two Native American state representatives in Minnesota at the time of her election to the Minnesota legislature.
In 2017, she formed the POCI (People of Color and Indigenous) caucus with other state legislators to reduce academic and economic disparities that affect communities of color.
A lifelong advocate for Minnesotans
A citizen of the White Earth Nation of Ojibwe, Peggy Flanagan is a longtime advocate for children, families, communities of color, and indigenous people.
Even before being elected to the House of Representatives in 2015, she fought to increase Minnesota’s minimum wage and worked to create a better Minnesota for the youngest Minnesotans as executive director of the Children’s Defense Fund.
And she has spent the last four years working with Governor Tim Walz to improve Minnesota public education, make health care more accessible and affordable, and build economic opportunities for Minnesota’s working families.
Lt. Governor Flanagan is a champion for reproductive rights
Following the Supreme Court ruling overturning Roe v. Wade, the Lieutenant Governor promised to fight conservative attacks on abortion and stand up for reproductive rights
And she promised to protect the right to choose in Minnesota and fight for legislation that would codify abortion access into Minnesota law. .
Congratulations, Lieutenant Governor Flanagan!
Peggy Flanagan is a progressive leader who will continue to advocate for all Minnesotans as Lt. Governor, and we’re thrilled to welcome her back to the Governor’s office.
With progressive control in all three branches of Minnesota’s government, the sky’s the limit for passing meaningful, ambitious policy that invests in our communities and dreams big.
