How Progressives Are Making Renting and Homeownership more affordable for MN.

Updated May 15, 2023: Governor Walz and progressives in the Minnesota House and Senate just passed and signed a budget into law making historic investments in housing!

The budget will create housing stability for thousands of Minnesotans through investments in new affordable housing infrastructure and measures to prevent homelessness and create new pathways to homeownership.

Minnesota has one of the nation’s worst homeownership racial gaps and is long overdue for change. The new budget makes the most significant investment in homeownership in our state’s history. It includes funding to assist more than 4,000 new first-generation homeowners and a historic investment to produce thousands of more affordable homes.

Progressives hope these investments will help build generational wealth and close Minnesota’s unacceptable equity gaps in homeownership.

The budget also commits to ending family and child homelessness by creating state-based rental vouchers. This critical rental assistance will create housing stability for 5,000 low-income Minnesota families across the state.

And in addition to investing in our public housing, progressives also passed a Lead Safe Homes Bill to ensure Minnesota kids are safe from lead exposure in their homes.

Housing is a human right, and all Minnesotans deserve a safe and affordable place they can call home. We’re thrilled to see our progressive leaders at the Capitol taking bold action to ensure every Minnesotan has a safe home to lay their heads down to sleep each night.
