On October 25th, 2023, the United States Congress elected conservative Mike Johnson as the 

56th Speaker of the House of Representatives. Mike Johnson is an extreme conservative who has tried to ban abortion nationwide, halt efforts to make health care more affordable, and gut support for public education. 

We’re spreading the word about Mike Johnson and his out-of-touch and extreme priorities. 

Here’s everything you need to know:

 Mike Johnson wants to ban abortion nationwide.

Mike Johnson is an anti-choice extremist and has been a leading advocate for a nationwide abortion ban following the end of Roe v. Wade and the constitutionally protected right to abortion. 

He even co-sponsored federal legislation that would effectively ban abortions nationwide after six to seven weeks.

If that’s not bad enough, Mike Johnson supports extreme legislation that would criminally prosecute doctors who perform abortions. 

These anti-choice policies are unacceptable. Abortion is health care, and everyone deserves the freedom to control their own bodies, make their own health care decisions, and do what’s best for themselves and their family. If Mike Johnson gets his way, abortion access will be on the line for millions of women across the country.

Mike Johnson will make health care more expensive. 

Mike Johnson is clearly not looking out for working Americans. Instead of fighting to keep health care more affordable and accessible, Mike Johnson has done the opposite. In Congress, he pushed for legislation that sided with big pharmaceutical companies and put corporate profits over the needs of everyday working families. 

Mike Johnson voted against the historic legislation passed by progressives that gives Medicare the power to negotiate for lower prescription drug prices. And he voted against capping the cost of insulin.

He even voted to cut programs like Medicare and Medicaid and has called cutting them his number one priority.

Mike Johnson is pushing an anti-LGBTQ+ agenda.

Mike Johnson is a staunch opponent of LGBTQ+ rights. Johnson not only opposes same-sex marriage, but he supports wildly extreme policies like arresting people for same-sex intercourse. 

These policies and positions are not only incredibly hurtful, they’re out of touch. 

Mike Johnson will devastate public schools. 

If we were grading on education policy, Mike Johnson would earn an F. Johnson is an outright opponent of public education and has pushed for harmful, ineffective “school choice” and “school vouchers” programs that cut funding from public schools and send it to unaccountable private schools.

As a congressman, Johnson co-sponsored hurtful legislation that would harm students, like banning gender-affirming care for minors.

Public schools are essential to our communities, children, and society. Instead of investing in public education, Mike Johnson has made it clear that he would rather shortchange students in favor of extreme policies that bolster his conservative agenda and harm our communities.

We need to hold conservatives like Mike Johnson accountable.

We need better from our leaders. Everyone deserves access to affordable, comprehensive health care, strong public schools, and a safe, loving community.
