Conservatives want to restrict access to a common abortion medication effectively suppressing abortion in all fifty states including Minnesota.
A group of conservative activists and organizations have sued the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) over its approval of mifepristone, one of two medications most commonly used in medication abortion in the United States. The Supreme Court began oral arguments on the case on March 26, 2024, and will deliver a decision sometime in June.
Even though Minnesota has legal protections for abortion care, the case could still have devastating effects. In 2023, sixty-one percent of abortions performed in Minnesota were administered through medication. If SCOTUS rules against reproductive freedom, it could be difficult for women in Minnesota to access standard abortion care.
Mifepristone is a safe and proven abortion medication
Mifepristone is safe and effective and has been used by more than five million people in the United States for abortion and miscarriage care since the FDA approved it more than 20 years ago. If the Supreme Court bans this life-saving medication, the ruling could also prohibit shipments of other medical supplies used in clinics, effectively suppressing abortion procedures in all 50 states.
It’s clear that this case is a calculated attack by conservatives on abortion access that will deny people the freedom to make their own health care decisions.
Consequently, the ruling could have repercussions that go far beyond abortion care – it could stifle medical innovation, upend the country’s drug approval process, and put every approved medication in the political crosshairs.
