Presidential Debate Recap: Donald Trump Dodges Abortion Ban Question, Wants to Rollback Reproductive Rights.

Tonight, during the ABC presidential debate against Vice President Kamala Harris, Donald Trump refused to answer if he would veto a federal abortion ban bill and outlined his extreme agenda that includes enacting many of the far-right goals of Project 2025 and rolling back reproductive rights nationwide.

During the debate, Donald Trump refused to answer if he would veto a national abortion ban because he knows that his extreme views are out of touch. But if we let his record speak for itself, it’s more than clear that Donald Trump will enact an extreme Project 2025 agenda that would devastate abortion, contraception, and reproductive health care.

As president, Donald Trump was responsible for the overturning of Roe v. Wade, which eliminated Americans’ constitutional right to abortion, established over 50 years ago. He opened the door for conservatives in states across the country to ban and criminalize access to abortion care.

Since then, twenty states have enacted near-total or total abortion bans, including Minnesota’s neighbors in Iowa, North Dakota, and South Dakota.

Trump has bragged about his role in overturning Roe v. Wade and promised to take further action to restrict abortion rights if given the opportunity.  And as president, Donald Trump supported a federal abortion ban bill.

To make matters worse, in 2022, Trump’s running mate, J.D. Vance, said that he “certainly would like abortion to be illegal nationally.” Vance also indicated he would support a federal fetal personhood law that same year. Project 2025 includes plans to ban the abortion pill and in vitro fertilization (IVF), allow states to monitor women who are pregnant, and take away coverage for birth control.

On the other hand, Vice President Kamala Harris has pledged to veto a nationwide abortion ban and restore the rights enshrined in Roe v. Wade. Kamala Harris also committed to improving access to reproductive health care. She said, “With Tim Walz by my side when I am president of the United States…we will pass a bill to restore reproductive freedom, and I will proudly sign it into law.”

Minnesota Governor Tim Walz signed historic legislation protecting the fundamental right of every Minnesotan to make decisions about their reproductive health care and expanding access to abortion care.
