Vice Presidential Debate Recap: J.D. Vance and Donald Trump Will Take Away Reproductive Freedoms & Health Care.

Tonight, during the CBS News Vice Presidential Debate, Donald Trump’s running mate, J.D. Vance, touted plans to roll back reproductive rights nationwide, dismantle the Affordable Care Act, and cut taxes for large corporations at the expense of working families. Here’s a recap of the candidates on the issues:

J.D. Vance supports a nationwide abortion ban

As president, Donald Trump overturned Roe v. Wade, which eliminated Americans’ constitutional right to abortion, established over 50 years ago, and opened the door for Republicans in states across the country to ban and criminalize access to abortion care.

Since then, twenty states have enacted near-total or total abortion bans, including Minnesota’s neighbors in Iowa, North Dakota, and South Dakota.

In 2022, Trump’s running mate, J.D. Vance, said that he “certainly would like abortion to be illegal nationally.” Vance also indicated he would support a federal fetal personhood law that same year.

On the other hand, Minnesota Governor Tim Walz signed historic legislation protecting the fundamental right of every Minnesotan to make decisions about their reproductive health care and expanding access to abortion care.

Governor Walz also signed the Reproductive Freedom Defense Act to ensure that patients traveling to Minnesota for abortion care and their providers are protected from legal attacks and criminal penalties from other states that have banned abortion.

J.D. Vance and Donald Trump want to cut taxes for large corporations at the expense of working families

Trump has a proven track record of putting corporations and CEOs over working families and enacting policies that mirror the goals of Project 2025.

While corporations were making record profits during his presidency, Trump slashed the corporate tax rate from 35% to 21%, the lowest corporate tax rate in eighty years.

After slashing the corporate tax rate by two-fifths, Trump and conservatives promised companies would boost wages and jobs. Instead, corporations went on a massive stock-buyback spending spree, gave their executives huge bonuses, and kept worker wages flat.

As governor, Tim Walz signed essential legislation to hold large corporations accountable and protect Minnesotans from hidden, burdensome, and excessive junk fees.

J.D. Vance and Donald Trump want to terminate the Affordable Care Act

Donald Trump has promised to “terminate” the Affordable Care Act if he is re-elected to a second term, which would take health care away from 2.3 million Minnesotans with pre-existing conditions like diabetes.

Tim Walz took historic measures to keep health care more affordable, including passing a law that caps co-pays for life-necessary medications and medical supplies like insulin, asthma inhalers, and EpiPens. Walz also passed legislation to prevent big pharmaceutical companies from price-gouging the cost of the prescription drugs that Minnesotans rely on.

Vance are pushing an extreme agenda to ban abortion, take away health care from Minnesotans with pre-existing conditions, and cut taxes for large corporations at the expense of hardworking families, Kamala Harris and Tim Walz have a proven track record of fighting for working people and our reproductive freedoms.
