Trump and Conservatives Are Betraying Federal Workers: Do MN Gubernatorial Candidates Agree?

Yesterday, Trump and conservatives in Congress suggested breaking their own law and not paying back federal workers who have been furloughed during Trump’s government shutdown.

By refusing to compensate them for their work during the government shutdown, Trump and conservatives are betraying those they deemed essential workers.

This situation wouldn’t even be happening in the first place if Trump and conservatives hadn’t shut down the federal government in their quest to give tax breaks to billionaires at the expense of Minnesotans’ health care.

Conservative gubernatorial candidates Scott Jensen, Kendall Qualls, and Kristin Robbins are all actively seeking Trump’s endorsement. Minnesotans deserve to know whether or not they support Trump’s plan to betray federal workers.

According to the Congressional Research Service, there are more than 18,000 federal workers employed in Minnesota.

Following a previous government shutdown that began under Trump’s presidency at the end of 2018, Congress adopted the Government Employee Fair Treatment Act. This act guaranteed back pay for the millions of federal workers affected by funding lapses during the shutdown. That law also applied to future federal government shutdowns. Trump signed the measure into law in 2019.

Now, Trump is going back on that commitment and saying, “There are some people that really don’t deserve to be taken care of and we’ll take care of them in a different way.”

We need to hold these conservatives accountable

It’s unacceptable that Donald Trump and conservatives are willing to betray those they deem essential workers. Minnesotans deserve to know whether or not these conservative gubernatorial candidates support Trump’s plan to betray federal workers.
