Trump’s Plan to Slash Health Care & Give Tax Breaks to Billionaires—What It Means for Minnesota

On Tuesday, March 4, 2025, during a speech to Congress, Donald Trump touted his plan to make drastic cuts to the programs Minnesotans rely on, like Medicaid and the Affordable Care Act, slashing health care funding to finance trillions in tax breaks for big corporations and billionaires like Elon Musk. Meanwhile, corporate greed continues driving up costs, forcing Minnesota’s working families to pay the price.

Instead of fighting for working families, Minnesota conservatives are following Trump’s lead, threatening to roll back health care, abortion rights, and public school funding—all while prices rise and working families shoulder the burden.

Didn’t watch Trump’s speech? Here’s what you need to know about his agenda and how it impacts Minnesota families.

Trump and Minnesota conservatives want to slash Medicaid and gut access to health care for Minnesotans to give tax breaks to billionaires

While corporations continue to raise prices on Minnesotans, Donald Trump and conservatives in Congress are pushing for trillions of dollars in tax breaks for big corporations and billionaires like Elon Musk at the expense of working families. To pay for this multi-trillion dollar tax giveaway for corporations and billionaires, Trump and conservatives are planning to slash Medicaid and the Affordable Care Act and strip health care away from hundreds of thousands of Minnesotans.

More than 85 percent of Minnesota conservatives in the legislature support Trump’s cuts to the Affordable Care Act, Medicaid, and social services to hand out trillions in tax breaks to big corporations and billionaires like Elon Musk.

Medicaid serves 1.4 million Minnesotans, or about one-quarter of the population, including 650,000 children and 125,000 people with disabilities. If enacted, this plan would devastate families across the state, leaving them without the essential support they rely on.

To pay for their giant tax giveaway to billionaires and big corporations, Donald Trump and Minnesota Republicans want to dismantle the U.S. Education Department and defund Minnesota’s public schools.

Trump and Minnesota conservatives are destroying public education

To pay for their giant tax giveaway to billionaires and big corporations, Donald Trump and Minnesota conservatives want to dismantle the U.S. Education Department and defund Minnesota’s public schools.

Minnesota schools, teachers, and students rely on federal and state funding to keep schools open and kids safe. Trump and Minnesota conservatives’ plans to cut funding for Minnesota’s public schools mean schools might have to cut classroom programs, special education and disability services, lay off teachers, and increase class sizes.

Trump’s cuts to the Department of Education could impact over 937,000 kids across 2,500 Minnesota K-12 schools.

Trump and Minnesota conservatives are fueling division instead of solving problems

Instead of working to lower egg prices and make life more affordable for Minnesota families, Minnesota conservatives and Donald Trump have been spending their time attacking trans kids and immigrants. These cruel policies exclude young people from equal participation in public life and open the door to further efforts to take away the civil rights and protections afforded to LGBTQ+ individuals and families.

Minnesota conservatives have introduced six bills this year attacking trans youth. Trump and conservatives have passed extreme legislation that aims to exclude undocumented Minnesotans from equal participation in public life.

And just like Trump, Minnesota conservatives are targeting immigrants with a slate of extreme legislation that aims to exclude undocumented Minnesotans from equal participation in public life, essential state-funded programs, and equal participation in public life.

While conservatives push cruel, divisive bills like this, they ignore the real challenges Minnesotans are facing — like the rising costs of childcare, health care, and housing. Instead of solving problems, conservatives are fueling division.

We need to Hold Trump and Minnesota Conservatives Accountable

Minnesotans deserve leaders who will stand up to Donald Trump and his billionaire friends and fight to protect our families, schools, communities, and fundamental rights.

Minnesotans won’t stand for Trump and conservatives’ extreme, divisive policy agenda.
