The biggest-ever cut to Medicaid is coming soon if US House conservatives get their way. A proposal released on Sunday, May 11th, detailed the $715 billion of cuts that would cause millions of Americans to lose Medicaid coverage and pay higher fees when they go to the doctor.
The Congressional Budget Office estimated that the legislation would reduce the number of people with health insurance by at least 8.6 million over the next 10 years. In Minnesota, 230,000 of our neighbors, family, and friends would lose coverage. The proposal adds strict work requirements, which have historically caused people to rapidly lose coverage. Additionally, some Medicaid recipients would be hit with increased out-of-pocket costs.
Donald Trump is behind it all. He has referred to this legislation as “one big, beautiful bill,” despite his claims that he would not touch Medicaid. Trump and Minnesota conservatives are perfectly aligned in their disregard for the health and safety of Minnesotans. These new cuts come shortly after every conservative in the Minnesota congressional delegation, including Pete Stauber, Tom Emmer, Michelle Fischbach, and Brad Finstad, voted to slash Medicaid and SNAP.
And more than 85 percent of conservatives in the Minnesota Legislature support Trump’s cuts to Medicaid.
Conservatives are calling this legislation a cost-saving measure. In reality, it will only increase health care costs for those who can least afford it. Why are they doing this? Trump and conservatives are gutting programs Minnesotans rely on, so that they can afford to line the pockets of billionaires like Elon Musk and give massive tax breaks to big corporations.
