MPR News broke the story today that Republican House Speaker Kurt Daudt was:
- sued three times over the past year for unpaid credit card debt
- late paying his property taxes for 2015 and paid them only when he realized MPR was investigating
And that:
- A prominent lobbyist and legal firm that Minnesota Republicans often employ helped Daudt with his legal issues, though he claims they didn’t know who he was (they held a birthday party for him in 2014)
- Daudt’s case was vacated, unlike 99% of other cases which were either still active or satisfied
There are many unanswered questions about whether or not Speaker Daudt was able to wield his influence at the Capitol to help him get out of trouble, but there is no question that he didn’t pay his bills–repeatedly.
