On the Issues: MN Gubernatorial Candidates on Protecting the Right to Abortion.

Last week, the Supreme Court ruled in Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization to eliminate the constitutional right to abortion established nearly 50 years ago in Roe v. Wade.

Minnesota Governor Tim Walz has promised to protect abortion rights in Minnesota. But his opponent, anti-choice extremist Scott Jensen, would ban abortions in Minnesota if elected governor. With Roe v. Wade overturned, Jensen’s threat to ban abortion in Minnesota is more real than ever.

Governor Tim Walz Will Fight for Abortion Rights in Minnesota

Governor Tim Walz has promised to protect access to safe, legal abortion. And the day after the Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade, Walz signed an executive order to protect those seeking abortions in Minnesota.

In Congress, Governor Walz consistently voted against restricting the constitutional right to abortion and voted against defunding Planned Parenthood.

And as Minnesota Governor, Governor Walz has vowed never to sign an abortion ban and said he would keep anti-choice judges off our state Supreme Court.

Governor Walz has shown time and time again that protecting the right to abortion is a priority. We do not doubt that under his watch, Minnesota can remain a haven for abortion care in the Midwest, despite the egregious Supreme Court decision.

Scott Jensen Would Ban Abortion in Minnesota

On the other hand, conservative candidate for governor Scott Jensen wants to move Minnesota far to the right and turn back the clock on women’s rights.

Scott Jensen intends to enact an extreme ban on abortions in Minnesota without any exceptions for rape or incest. He even supports a Texas-style law that bans abortion as early as six weeks, criminalizes abortion, allows strangers to collect $10,000 for reporting women who have abortions, and fines or arrests doctors who perform abortions.

That is unacceptable.

With our neighboring states prepared to ban abortion now that Roe has been overturned, Minnesota remains a crucial provider of abortion care in the Midwest. In fact, Minnesota abortion providers are already seeing an overwhelming influx of patients from other states looking for the care they need.

If Scott Jensen gets his way, abortion access will be on the line for millions of women.

Matt Birk is an Anti-Choice Extremist

Jensen’s running mate, Matt Birk, is just as dangerous for reproductive rights. In 2013, Birk was exposed for his extreme anti-choice politics. Birk even refused to attend a White House event with his NFL teammates because President Obama supported a woman’s right to choose.

Matt Birk also said that Planned Parenthood was next to the KKK as the most racist organization in America and said rape victims shouldn’t be able to get an abortion.

Lieutenant Governor Peggy Flannagan is a Proven Pro-Choice Champion

Lieutenant Governor Peggy Flannagan has promised to protect the right to choose. With Roe. overturned, she is committed to codifying abortion access into Minnesota law.

Following the Supreme Court ruling, the Lieutenant Governor issued a statement that promised to fight conservative attacks on abortion:

“As long as we are in the governor’s office, Gov. Walz and I will not put anti-choice judges on the state Supreme Court, and we will block any anti-choice legislation. The Republican ticket has promised to pass one of the most extreme abortion bans in the nation – we cannot let that happen.”

Scott Jensen is Out of Touch With Minnesota

Jensen’s promise to ban abortion is also wildly out of touch with the needs and wants of Minnesotans. Sixty percent of Minnesota voters say abortion should be legal in all or most cases, and sixty-five percent would oppose new severe restrictions on abortion.

We need to hold Scott Jensen accountable.
