On April 23, Governor Walz delivered the 2025 State of the State before a joint session of the Minnesota Legislature.
During the address, the Governor delivered a powerful message: Minnesota will not be dragged down by the chaos emanating from Donald Trump’s federal actions and Minnesota conservatives complicity. Trump and Minnesota conservatives plan to gut essential programs that Minnesotans rely on, like Medicaid, while cutting taxes for billionaires is not just reckless – it’s hurting working families across the state. In his speech, Governor Walz reaffirmed his commitment to protecting Minnesotans and continuing to build a state that protects and prioritizes everyone – not just the wealthy and corporations.
Here are three key takeaways:
Trump and the Minnesota conservatives want to slash Medicaid and gut access to health care for Minnesotans to give tax breaks to billionaires
While corporations continue to raise prices on Minnesotans, Donald Trump and Republicans in Congress are pushing for trillions of dollars in tax breaks for big corporations and billionaires like Elon Musk at the expense of working families. To pay for this multi-trillion dollar tax giveaway for corporations and billionaires, Trump and conservatives are planning to slash Medicaid and the Affordable Care Act and strip health care away from hundreds of thousands of Minnesotans.
Medicaid covers essential, lifesaving health care for 1.4 million Minnesotans, including pregnant women, seniors, children, and people with disabilities. This means people can see a doctor when they are sick and obtain the medication they need.
But Governor Walz and progressives in the Minnesota Legislature are fighting back. Progressives have proposed a budget that would shift the burden of Trump’s cuts to insurance companies, not patients and working families and make for-profit health care corporations pay their fair share in light of these devastating cuts.
Trump is trying to gut public education, but Minnesota progressives are standing strong
Minnesota schools, teachers, and students rely on federal and state funding to keep schools open and kids safe. That’s why Trump’s recent cuts to the Department of Education are devastating for Minnesota’s public schools, which might have to cut classroom programs, special education, mental health, and disability services, lay off teachers, and increase class sizes.
But Governor Walz said in Minnesota, we protect schools, students, and families. From universal school meals to a game-changing child tax credit that supports working families, progressives in the legislature have worked hard to deliver for our kids.
Minnesotans deserve leaders who will stand up to Donald Trump and fight to protect our schools, students, and communities. But, instead of fighting back against Trump’s attack on public education, Minnesota conservatives want to defund Minnesota public schools.
Progressives want to build an economy that works for everyone – not just those at the very top
Governor Walz didn’t mince words when it came to Trump’s disastrous impact on the economy and working families across the country and in Minnesota. He called out the Trump administration’s reckless tariff policies, which will drive costs for working families on things like groceries and gas while proposing trillions of dollars in tax cuts for large corporations.
Instead of fighting back against this attack on working people, Minnesota conservatives want to cut taxes for the wealthy while rolling back access to health care, public education, and paid family leave.
Progressives, on the other hand, are working hard to make corporations pay their fair share and pass a balanced budget that weathers the storm to come and showcases responsible and ambitious leadership.
We Must Hold Trump and Conservatives Accountable
Minnesotans deserve leaders who will stand up to Trump and his billionaire friends—not sell out working people so they can line their pockets. We’re glad to have progressives like Governor Walz leading the way.
