Last week marked Trump’s first 100 days in the Presidential office. Trump’s term thus far has been catastrophic for working families across the country who rely on federal funding and programs to keep schools strong, families healthy, and an economy they can afford to participate in.
But what do Trump’s actions mean for Minnesotans?
TLDR: To pay for the most significant tax break in American history for large corporations and billionaires like Elon Musk, Donald Trump has dismantled the Department of Education, raised prices on working families, and is threatening massive health care funding cuts to programs like Medicaid.
Donald Trump and Minnesota Conservatives are Putting Public Education on the Chopping Block
To pay for trillions of dollars in tax cuts to billionaires, Trump is dissolving the Department of Education and defunding Minnesota public schools.
Minnesota schools, teachers, and students rely on federal and state funding to keep schools open and kids safe. Trump and Minnesota conservatives’ plans to cut funding for Minnesota’s public schools mean schools might have to cut classroom programs, special education, mental health and disability services, lay off teachers, and increase class sizes.
Minnesota conservatives are also trying to direct what can be taught in schools using Donald Trump’s Project 2025 as the blueprint. Minnesota conservatives are attempting to repeal ethnic studies requirements, ramp up parental involvement in school curricula, and ban books they deem inappropriate.
Hundreds of Thousands of Minnesotans are at Risk of Losing Health Care Coverage
Trump and conservatives in Congress proposed a budget that would reduce funding for Medicare and Medicaid by $880 billion over the next ten years.
Medicaid, called Medical Assistance in Minnesota, serves about 1.3 million Minnesotans. It provides health coverage to low-income families and individuals, and long-term care for seniors and people with disabilities.
Unfortunately, more than 85 percent of Minnesota conservatives in the legislature support Trump’s cuts to the Affordable Care Act, Medicaid, and social services to hand out trillions in tax breaks to big corporations and billionaires like Elon Musk.
But Governor Walz and progressives in the Minnesota Legislature are fighting back. Progressives have proposed a budget that would shift the burden of Trump’s cuts to insurance companies, not patients and working families and make for-profit health care corporations pay their fair share in light of these devastating cuts.
Trump’s Tariffs are a Direct Hit on Minnesota’s Economy
In a devastating move for working families across the country and Minnesota, Donald Trump announced a sweeping set of new tariffs on imported goods. These tariffs are among the largest in U.S. history, and economists warn they could cost the average American up to $3,800 per year in higher prices.
Last year, Minnesota imported $40 billion worth of goods, including oil, machinery, vehicles, medical devices, and more.
These tariffs mean that Minnesota families might see higher prices on everything from gas to groceries.
We need to fight back against Donald Trump and Minnesota Conservatives
Instead of fighting back against Trump’s reckless trade war, Minnesota conservatives are focused on cutting taxes for the wealthy while rolling back access to health care, public education, and paid family leave.
That’s why Minnesota progressives are doing everything we can to prevent the damage that Trump’s cuts would cause to families and protect the freedoms and rights of Minnesotans.
Minnesota’s Attorney General, Keith Ellison, is central to over a dozen lawsuits pushing back against the Trump administration and fishing for Minnesota’s public education, health care services, LGBTQ+ rights, and clean climate regulations.
Progressives in the Minnesota Legislature are working hard to make corporations pay their fair share and pass a balanced budget that weathers the storm and puts families and working people first.
And Gov. Tim Walz has committed to protecting Minnesotans and continuing to build a state that protects and prioritizes everyone – not just the wealthy and corporations.
Minnesotans deserve leaders who will stand up to Trump and his billionaire friends—not sell out working people so they can line their pockets. Join Us in our work to hold conservatives accountable and build a better Minnesota for everyone.
