More than 440,000 people in Minnesota, many of whom are kids, seniors, and people with disabilities, will have their food assistance taken away in a few days because Trump and conservatives shut down the federal government. Meanwhile, Trump is adding a new 90,000-square-foot ballroom to the White House and planning tax breaks for corporations and billionaires.
In November, SNAP (Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program) benefits that provide critical food assistance to Minnesotans will run out of funding, and Trump and conservatives are to blame.
With no end in sight for Trump and conservatives’ government shutdown, Minnesota kids, seniors, and people with disabilities will face serious difficulties accessing the food they need to survive.
Minnesota Families Deserve Better.
Food shelf use in Minnesota has been on the rise for four years in a row, and when SNAP benefits run out on November 1st, food banks will see a surge in visitors. But Trump administration cuts to the Emergency Food Assistance Program this summer slashed more than a million pounds of food headed to Minnesota food shelves, forcing some to limit how much shoppers can bring home. Food insecurity has negative impacts on people of all ages, but especially children.
Even with access to free breakfast and lunch at school, over 150,000 Minnesota children rely on SNAP to get the nutrition they need. When food assistance programs are cut, kids are unable to come to school well-fed or ready to learn, ultimately hurting educational outcomes. Minnesota kids deserve leaders who will stand up for them and make sure their needs are met.
At a time when living expenses are already skyrocketing, nobody should have to worry about where their next meal will come from.
Trump and Conservatives’ Budget Benefits the Ultra-Wealthy.
Not only are Trump and conservatives willing to let SNAP benefits run out, but they also want to cut millions of dollars in health care funding to give tax breaks to billionaires and big corporations. These cuts will leave hundreds of thousands of Minnesotans without health insurance and will raise health care costs for even more of us.Â
We can’t let Trump and conservatives get away with this.
